ADVICE ? Advice? : Should you take it?, should you listen? Well, we can help a little on certain subjects as its all too easy to get carried away with third hand information or indeed your lack of understanding of how to tune your car and what should be done to increase its performance if you are a first time tuner or owner. When your car exits the factory its is made as one of thousands and to tolerances which vary. It is common that two cars from the same production line can have differences in performance and build. Levels of tune can depend on your current specification and many other factors should be considered prior to buying your next performance part. Basics such as, the age and condition, the mileage covered, its use currently and in the future and your expectations from making a change to your car as well as the implications of making the change to other components installed and how they will react. Japanese cars are generally accepted to be restricted in performance to accommodate daily use and to last for a long time, with this in mind you car has the potential to be modified to work more efficiently and produce better results than it was actually built for. Below we list the ‘Stage 1 ‘ recommended modifications for any Japanese car : Stage 1 : Aftermarket Air intake system / induction kit Aftermarket Spark Plugs Aftermarket Exhaust System Aftermarket exhaust headers or downpipes Aftermarket Catalyst replacement pipe Aftermarket Air Dump system ( for turbo cars ) With these items installed your car should make more power and have more response to its previous performance. In the main it is safe to change these parts without having any later problems and they are simple ‘ bolt on ‘ When installing these parts we would also recommend resetting the cars ECU ( the computer which controls the engine ) so that it can run through its self learning stages once again and allow for the new parts. Should you wish to gain even more from your car, you now enter the danger zone if you do not act wisely and follow the advice of professionals with experience in tuning Japanese cars. Moving on to Stage 2 requires more thought. Again for a road car, Stage 2 should be regarded as the next step to unleash hidden power and requires much more involved and specialist work. Stage 2 : Turbo boost pressure increase Additional Fuel computer for the stock ECU Camshafts Cam Pulleys Possible clutch upgrade
